E-MAIL DELIVERY OF LIBRARY NOTICES

There is now a system-run program for e-mail delivery for all library notices. These library notices include reserve pick-up notices, overdue notices, bill notices and courtesy notices.

If you would like to receive library notices by e-mail, check that your e-mail address is listed in your library account. If you prefer to be called or receive postal notices, you cannot have an e-mail address listed in your library account.*

E-mailed reserve pick-up notices are free. If you don't have an e-mail account, you will be called when a reserve is ready for pick-up. This service is also free. If we do not get a person or an answering machine, we will send a postcard and there will be a 30 cent charge. You can also choose to receive pick-up notices by postal mail. There will be a 30 cent charge for all postcards mailed by the Library, even if the item is not picked up.

Please remember...if you opt for e-mail notification, all library notices will be e-mailed. Add notices@baldwinpl.org to your contact list, and check your e-mail account often. If you have any questions, please call the Reference Desk at 223-6228.

We hope you enjoy this service.

*To access your library account information:
1. Go to www.alisweb.org/patroninfo. The system will ask for your library card number and PIN** (Personal Identification Number).
2. When you are in your account, the screen will have a link "Modify Personal Info." Enter the e-mail address where you want e-mail notices sent and click "Submit."

**PIN (Personal Identification Number):
The first time you log onto "My Account," you need to select a PIN, which is any combination of letters and/or numbers of your choice (we recommend that you use at least four characters). At this time, enter your library card barcode and the PIN you want. Click "Submit." Another page will open and you will be asked to type the PIN two more times to verify the information. Please call the Reference Department at 223-6228 if you are having difficulty setting your PIN.

Twilight at the World of Tomorrow: Genius, Madness, Murder, and the 1939 World's Fair on the Brink of War
by James Mauro (907.4747 M)

The summer of 1939 was an epic turning point for America—a brief window
between the Great Depression and World War II. It was the last season of
unbridled hope for peace and prosperity; by Labor Day, the Nazis were in Poland. And nothing would come to symbolize this transformation from acute
optimism to fear and dread more than the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

A glorious vision of the future, the Fair introduced television, the fax machine, nylon, and fluorescent lights. The “World of Tomorrow,” as it was called, was a dream city built upon a notorious garbage dump—The Great Gatsby’s infamous ash heaps. Yet these lofty dreams would come crashing down to earth in just two years. From the fair’s opening on a stormy spring day, everything that could go wrong did: not just freakish weather but power failures and bomb threats.

Two New York City police detectives, Joe Lynch and Freddy Socha, who had
been assigned to investigate a series of bomb threats and explosions that had terrorized the city for months, would have a rendezvous with destiny at the Fair: During the summer of 1940, in a chilling preview of things to come, terrorism would arrive on American shores—and the grounds of the World’s Fair.

Ah-Choo!: The Uncommon Life of Your Common Cold
by Jennifer Ackerman (616.205 A)

Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival
by John Vaillant (599.756 V)

It's December 1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East. The tiger isn't just killing people, it's annihilating them, and a team of men and their dogs must hunt it on foot through the forest in the brutal cold. As the trackers sift through the gruesome remains of the victims, they discover that these attacks aren’t random: the tiger is apparently engaged in a vendetta. Injured, starving, and extremely dangerous, the tiger must be found before it strikes again.

As he re-creates these extraordinary events, John Vaillant gives us an
unforgettable portrait of this spectacularly beautiful and mysterious region. We meet the native tribes who for centuries have worshipped and lived alongside tigers, even sharing their kills with them. We witness the arrival of Russian settlers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, soldiers and hunters who greatly diminished the tiger populations. And we come to know their descendants, who, crushed by poverty, have turned to poaching and further upset the natural balance of the region. This absolutely gripping tale of man and nature that leads inexorably to a final showdown in a clearing deep in the taiga.

One Dog at a Time: Saving the Strays of Afghanistan
by Pen Farthing (636.0832 F)

In the remote outpost of Now Zad, Afghanistan, Pen Farthing and his troop of young Royal Marines survive frequent engagements with the Taliban and forge links with the local community. Appalled by the horrors of local dog fighting, Pen has no choice but to intervene. Then one of the dogs he frees finds his way into the Marine compound—and into Pen’s heart. Soon other strays are drawn into the sanctuary provided by the makeshift pound, including one young mother who crawls under the compound fence carrying her newborn pups to safety. As his tour of duty draws to an end, Pen cannot leave the dogs of Now Zad to their fates. He begins hatching plans to help them escape to a better life.

One Dog at a Time is the gripping account of one man’s courage and humanity, and his fight to make a difference in the most hostile and dangerous environments, one dog at a time.

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void
by Mary Roach (571.0919 R)

Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? have sex? smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations. As Mary Roach discovers, it's possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASAs new space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Roach takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth.

FOOD! GLORIOUS FOOD! CULINARY MEMOIRS

Food memoirs, an alchemic blend of narrative and instruction, offer
scrumptious delights. Indulge your need for story and get some inspiration for tonight's dinner with these delicious titles.

Giulia Melucci's humorous I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti
([BIOG] B Melucci) recounts the author's various romances, heartaches, and breakups. As part of her scheme to win new hearts, Melucci cooks delicious meals like Grilled Marinated Flank Steak ("Dinner To Impress an Older Gentleman") for her love interests. And when the relationships are over and the tears have fallen, she cooks herself Calming Coq au Vin and other comfort food.

Edited by Jenni Ferrari-Adler, Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Dining Alone (641.561 A) is a tantalizing collection of essays detailing the savory and secret meals that well-known writers and other "foodies" eat when they are alone. Solitary dining experiences range from eating asparagus daily for two months, making Phoebe Nobles an "Asparagus Superhero," to eating solo in a Manhattan restaurant. Whether indulging in mashed potatoes to mend broken hearts or a bowl of black beans and onions for solace, these authors have cooked up a savory buffet of lunchtime or dinner reads.

Throughout her life, Molly Wizenberg's family rituals happened in kitchens. In her fascinating A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table ([BIOG] B Wizenberg), she recalls these special times as she traces her love for cooking from her childhood to her current job as a freelance food writer. After her father's death, Wizenberg lived in Paris while deciding what to do with her life. She shopped in chocolate shops, ate at boulangeries , and delighted in all the culinary tastes that the city offered her-and eventually her interest in food and cooking turned into the blog Orangette. Such tempting recipes as Custard-Filled Corn Bread and Little Corn Cakes with Bacon, Tomato, and Avocado just beg to be made and devoured by readers.

A quest to find her family's authentic recipe for ravioli leads Laura Schenone on a global adventure in The Lost Ravioli Recipes of Hoboken: A Search for Food and Family (641.822 S). Hearing the story of her great-grandmother's immigration from Genoa to America and the family's secret method, Schenone becomes obsessed with locating the recipe and with making perfect little pockets of dough. In her travels from New Jersey to Italy, she discovers great food, good friends, and the everlasting feeling of family.

After working in a tedious Hollywood job, Gesine Bullock-Prado and her husband move to Vermont to make her dreams of becoming a baker come true. Starting from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time (641.815 B) details Bullock-Prado's journey, which begins when she uses her savings to transform a little shop into Gesine Confectionary. Readers follow her daily routine: arriving at four in the morning, spending 15 hours baking delectable treats for her customers, and running her shop. For readers enchanted by the day-to-day happenings of a small-town baker with a famous sister, actress Sandra Bullock, this lively memoir ends much too quickly.

This column was contributed by freelance writer April L. Judge, Director of the West Caldwell Public Library, NJ, and Chair of the New Jersey Library Association's National Reading Group Month Task Force.

Neal Wyatt compiles Library Journal 's online feature Wyatt's World and is the author of The Readers' Advisory Guide to Nonfiction (ALA Editions, 2007). She is a collection development and readers' advisory librarian from Virginia.

SEPTEMBER ATRIUM DISPLAYS

Paintings and Unique Souvenirs from Around the World by
Annette K. Price

The late Annette K. Price (Baldwin) would be very pleased to know of this exhibit. She was a Philadelphia native who married a New York G.I. after World War II, and raised a family in Cambria Heights, Queens; Center Moriches, L.I. and Baldwin, L.I. After being widowed in 1972, she resumed her hobby of painting.

Annette K. Price lived in Baldwin from 1960 - 2004 --- more than 44 years. She painted in oils, water paints and drew in pastels. No one knew the extent of her work. Boxes of unframed oil paintings, drawings, and water paintings were discovered in her Baldwin home after her death.

This exhibit is presented by her daughter, Carla Price.
